Abstract

368,187. Tipping vehicles ; door fastenings ; hinges. TENNANT, W. J., 111, Hatton Garden, London.-(Commercial Shearing & Stamping Co. ; Youngstown, Ohio, U.S.A.) July 21, 1931, No. 20852. [Class 108 (i).] In a tipping vehicle adapted to be tipped to either side or to the rear the floor of the body is reinforced and provided with a false floor having a wooden packing and the side and end doors are hinged to the floor, side posts being dispensed with, and are opened and shut and locked as necessary. The floor comprises I-beams 18, side irons 22, 23, a floor sheet 27, transverse beams 24 .. 29, a false bottom 32, Fig. 11, and a wooden filler 33. The body is provided with hinges or pivots at the four corners about which the body is arranged to tip selectively. Fig. 6 shows the hinges at the front of the body and comprise pivoted projections 17 adapted to enter cups 16 on a transverse girder 14 carried by the chassis. A locking bar 52, normally clear of the projections 17 for end tipping, is adapted to be moved to lock either hinge for side tipping by means of a rack and segment 53, 54 operated from the driver's cab by means of the shaft 55. The rear hinge pins are similar but universally pivoted and provided with a locking bar which normally engages both hinges for rear pivoting and which is operated by the shaft 55 to release one of the hinges for side tipping. The side gates are pivoted at the bottom at 80, Fig. 17, to the floor and are connected by a link 81 to a rocker 82 pivoted at 83 and provided with a roller 87 which on tipping of the vehicle to the side rolls up a cam 64, Fig. 6, causing the rocker to pivot and the side gate to commence opening, the opening being completed when the rocker 82 is freed from the cam 64. The gate on the other side is locked during this movement by means of a lever 66 operated by the locking bar 52 engaging a projection 90, Fig. 17, and throwing a locking bar 86 into a bearing 85 carried by the rocker 82 of the gate requiring to be locked. The rear gate 47 is similarly pivoted to the floor at 97 and connected by a link 95 to a rocker 94 pivoted at 93 and having a roller coacting with a cam 77 in a similar manner to the side gates. The side and end gates are provided with curved shields 98 to bridge the gap between the body and the gate when the latter is open. The rear gate may, when desired, be pivoted at the top and for this purpose is provided with sliding bolts which may enter recesses in the top of the side gates. Means are provided for releasing the lower pivots comprising a rack 101 and pinion 102 operating a bar 100 which carries the lower pivots 97 and withdraws them from their bearings, the links 95 being unshipped. Means are provided for locking the rear gate when it is pivoted at the top comprising a hook 130, Fig. 22, engaging a bracket 133 and arranged to move both longitudinally and vertically by means of the handle 134 and cam bearing 132. The hydraulic cylinder 109, Fig. 20, is trunnioned universally in the chassis and comprises three hollow rams 111, 112, 113, pressure fluid being supplied at the trunnions. The cylinder is trunnioned to the body by means of a head 120, 121.
