Abstract

368,097. Wrapping-machines. HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK AKT.- GES., F., 99, Olgastrasse, Cannstatt, Stuttgart, Germany. April 1, 1931, No. 9829. Convention date, April 7, 1930. [Class 94 (i).] Flat articles or packs of sheet material such as sensitized copying paper or photographic cards are enclosed in a double wrapper of paper, a coupon is added and an outer wrapper is applied to form a closure like an envelope. The operations take place in a plurality of folding wheels and a stationary folding box. Stop motions are provided to prevent the sheet feeding or gumming mechanisms from operating in the absence of an article. The articles 1 are placed in spring holders 2a, 2b on a conveyer chain 3 and arrive at position 1a in front of the first folding wheel 6. The passage of an article operates a feeler 30 which releases the drive from web feeding rollers 15, 15a. Webs r, s, of red and black paper respectively, are fed from reels 10, 11 through a guide x, so that, when a member 55 moves the article to the right, Fig. 1, the webs are carried with it into the pocket 60, 61 of the folding wheel. Knives 25, 26 sever the web when this movement commences. The wrapper and article are now disposed as diagrammatically shown at station I, Fig. 9. After two intermittent rotations of the folding wheel, of 90‹ each, the partly wrapped article is expelled from the pocket 60, 61 into a pocket 70 on a second folding wheel 7 by a member 75. This results in the further folding operations shown at station II, Fig. 9. The feeding members 55, 75 and also members 80, 80a, which operate subsequently, are mounted for collective actuation on a slide rod 320. The wheel 7 carries the packet with position in front of a stationary folding box, shown in cross section in Fig. 4a, into which it is thrust by a member 80 and comprising an upper plate 83 and a lower guide rail 85, gapped to allow the member 80a, which feeds it through the box, to pass. The upper plate is bevelled at 83a, 83b to cause the projecting ends of the wrapper to bend downwards into a position at which they can be engaged and folded downwards and inwards about the knife-edges 85a, 85b by rollers 95, 95a. The packet is now at station III, Fig. 9. At this point, a card or coupon may be deposited on the plate 83 and fed simultaneously with the packet into the next folding mechanism. A sheet B, Fig. 9, to form the outer wrapper, is fed from a pile 150 into a guide 154 so as to be in position between the folding box and the folding wheel 8. In order to prevent the supply of a coupon and an outer wrapper if no packet arrives from the folding wheel 7, a feeler 170 is mounted so as to control both feeds. The feeding member 80a thrusts the packet and this wrapper into a pocket in the wheel, in which the operations indicated at station IV, Fig. 9, take place. The insertion into the wheel causes the parts a, b of the wrapper to be applied to the top and bottom of the packet while the flaps c, d, e remain projecting at the sides and edge. The wheel 8 rotates in a direction opposite to that of the wheels 6, 7, and carries the packet down to a position where these flaps are vertically disposed. Adhesive is applied at c<x>, d<x>, e<x> and a crease n formed to facilitate the final folding operations. The next intermittent rotation of the wheel carries the packet past rails which turn in the flaps c, d, e through a right-angle. Rails 336, Fig. 1, carrying pawls 337, 338, 339, advance the packet in steps between a top plate 380 and a bottom plate, station V, Fig. 9. The bottom plate turns up the flap e, the side flaps c, d being turned in in any suitable manner by side rails. Rubber-faced plungers 386, 387 apply pressure before the completed packet is thrust into a delivery shoot 505 by a plunger 395.
