Feb. 27, 1931, No. 6187. :Class 112.] A row of needles on a tufting machine form free loop stitches which are caught by bills and severed by a row of cutters, any of which can be removed, arranged below the throat plate. The threads are led through a thread tension device 159, Fig. 4, to the needles 18. The fabric is fed from the front of the machine between two discs 43, 49 and passes beneath the presser foot 46. When the machine is started the needles pass through the fabric and the bills 117 are rotated about pivots 110 by cam 124 on the main shaft 8, and grip the loops against the fixed plate 119, where they are cut by an upward movement of the cutters 149, Fig. 6. The loops are then seized between teeth on two relatively sliding plates 76, 81, carried by a rocking frame 73 and are moved rearwardly, Fig. 7, with the fabric to clear the needles on their next descent. The toothed plate 76 is moved over the toothed plate 81 to grip the severed loops by a cam 99 on the main shaft 8 and bent arm lever 102, 98, Fig. 9. The rocking movement of the frame 73 is given by a cam 101 on the shaft 8, Fig. 6. The cutters are reversible and any number can be removed to vary the design.
