Abstract

367,032. Winding a number of yarns in close formation. LANGSTRETH, M., of Dunlop Cotton Mills, Osnaburgh Street, London, NASMITH, F., of Universal Winding Co., Saville Street, Oxford Road, Manchester, and DUNLOP COTTON MILLS, Ltd., Osnaburgh Street, London. Nov. 15, 1930, No. 34440. [Class 120 (ii).] In a machine for winding a number of yarns or threads side by side in closely related formation on a spindle 11, Fig. 1, a yarnguiding or tensiondistributing device 20 is provided between the yarn supplies and the spindle 11, the strands being led under tension in separated formation from their separate supplies to the device 20 and being caused to traverse the latter so that they take up a closely related formation in which they pass to the spindle 11. The device 20 affords a circular or conical surface for the strands which are given a complete or substantially complete turn therearound. The yarns pass from the supplies through breakage levers or stop-motion feelers 17 to the device 20 and over this range are separated and individually tensioned. In passage round the concave surface of the device 20 the strands take up a " tape " formation and from thence to the winding spindle 11 the strands support each other against the tension so that any breakage will occur before the strands leave the roller 20. After leaving the roller 20 the yarns pass over a guide roller 22, down to a second guide roller 15, through the traversing yarnguide 12 on to the winding spindle 11. The members 15, 20, 22 are adjustably supported on a bracket 13 carried at the top of the machine frame 10, the roller 20 being mounted on an adjustable spindle-extension 19 carried by an angularly-adjustable arm 18. In Fig. 1 two sets of yarns are shown passing over two rollers 20, two guide rollers 22, 220 thence down to the guide roller 15 and to separate yarn packages. The roller 20 is formed with a concave 'barrel 24, Fig. 3, supported by internal flanges 25 running on ball bearings 26 on a central spindle 27, stationary cheeks 31, shaped at 32 to overlie the ends of the barrel and flared at 33, abutting against collars 28, 29 on the spindle 27. In a modification, the barrel 24 is supported by flanges 34 carried by a selflubricating or like bush 35 on the spindle 27, Fig. 4.
