Abstract

366,095. Vaporizing solidified carbon dioxide. CLARK, S. T. ELLICE- and BARRETT & ELERS, Ltd., Dace Road, Old Ford, London. Oct. 29, 1930, No. 32538. [Class 8 (ii).] Solid. carbon dioxide is vaporized, freed :from air and conducted to an apparatus for carbonating liquids. Fig. 1 shows apparatus wherein a block of solid carbon dioxide is placed in a chamber A on a partition, 1 and the cover then closed and sealed, the substance is allowed to vaporize and air in the chamber blown off by a relief valve 7. The valve is then closed and the sliding partition 1 withdrawn, allowing the block to fall on to a grid 13 in the lower part of the chamber. Heating medium is passed through a coil 17 in the chamber and the gas evolved passes through a warming chamber 9 to a gas-holder 10. The rise of this holder to a certain height causes a stop 20 to close the valve 18 controlling the supply of heating medium. Water from the block drains away through a cock 14. The chamber A may alternatively be heated by electricity or gas burners or by adjunction of articles &c. to be cooled, e.g. the chamber may be surrounded by a chamber in which ice cream mav be frozen or meat cooled. The warming chamber 9 may also be a refrigerating chamber fitted with a gas-tight door. The valve 18 or a rheostat may be controlled by the pressure of gas in the chamber A. In a modification, the partition 1 may be vertical, the block being pushed from one compartment to the other by a rod manipulated from outside. The warming chamber 9 and holder 10 may be dispensed with. The chamber A may comprise one compartment only fitted with a relief valve. Fig. 3 shows a vaporizing chamber 26 in which the block may be pushed by a piston 34 into the bell of the gas-holder wherein it rests on a grid 35. The water in this holder may be heated, the temperature being controlled by a thermostat. In a further modification, a tube extending through the bottom of the gas-holder forms a vaporizer having a partition and a rod by which the block of solid carbon dioxide may be pushed through the open upper end of the tube into the water. In still further modifications, the vaporizing chamber may be a single compartment located on the top of the bell, separated .from it by a shutter, or may be disposed within the bell. Glycerine on the water may prevent freezing.
