Abstract
364,646. Bottling ether. DEHN, F. B., 103, Kingsway, London.-(Mallinckrodt Chemical Works; 3600, North 2nd Street, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A.) Sept. 2, 1930, No. 26193. [Class 125 (ii).] Relates to filling cans with ether &c. by methods in which the cans are filled with inert gas which is subsequently displaced by the incoming liquid. According to the invention the air is removed from the cans &c. by counterflow-diffusion with nitrogen &c. as the liquid is introduced. The apparatus employed comprises a base 1 arranged at a slope of 4‹ so that the liquid in the supply tank 24 will be deeper on one side (see line A-A), Fig. 1. Cans are supplied to a rotary can-wheel 23 by a conveyer 101. The wheel 23 revolves intermittently at thirty-two movements per revolution, and has thirty-two can-receiving recesses on the periphery each provided with a can controller 85. Supported on a base E is a fixed wheel 9 having a can raising cam 11 at its outer periphery and a cam and valve plate on the inner hub thereof. The wheel 23 is rotated by a hub on the vertical shaft 15 which carries the tank 24. Telescopic nitrogen tubes 35 co-operate with ether tubes 37 and are operated by a cam 27. The intermittent rotation of the wheel 23 is controlled by a ratchet and pawl mechanism 41 and is imparted thereto by a pawl 43 operated through linkage 65, 61, 63, 47 from the shaft 69. As each can is pressed into a recess 85 it engages a control pin 107 which co-operates with an actuating rod 127. The rods 121 extend into the tank 24 where they control ether valves which deliver measured quantities from cups through the pipes 37 to the cans D. If there is no can in a recess 85 the ether valve corresponding to that recess is not operated. The cans are lifted by elevators 139 operated by the cam 11, into contact with the sealing heads 147. Caps Fare fed by a supply pipe 5 to a passage 163 from which air is excluded by a gate valve 165 when the valve is down. The nitrogen tubes 35 surround the ether tubes and have openings 177 communicating with a slot 181, and thence to the valve ports 183. Openings 187 are provided in the tubes for ejecting nitrogen. The valves 195 are operated by feelers 209 which are engaged by the cans as they are lifted, and ether and nitrogen are supplied simultaneously to the cans therefrom. The displaced air passes out by a port 197. The capping head 291 comprises two die-blocks which are closed around the capsule by downwardly moving spurs. A rail 105 holds the cans in the wheel 23, and diffusion of air and nitrogen takes place over twelve movements of the wheel before the ether valve is opened. Ether and nitrogen flow into the cans during the fourteenth to the twenty-second movement. The ether cups fill on the deep side of the tank 24, and discharge on the shallow side, means being provided to compensate for changes of temperature. Specification 207,745, [Class 125 (ii), Bottle &c., Filling &c.], is referred to.
