[Classes 69 (i) and 135.] In apparatus for delivering measured quantities of liquids a cut-off device biased to move' to its cut-off position is retained in its non- cut-off position by two detents controlled by a liquid meter one of which is rendered inoperative just before the required quantity of liquid has been delivered while the other is rendered inoperative when the exact quantity has been delivered. The first detent is preset for the required number of units and the other detent is operated once for each unit. The cock 1 for cutting off the supply of liquid is controlled by a lever 2 pivoted at 3 and engaged at its hardened end 4 by two detents 5, 6 when the lever is moved to open the cock. Adjustable tappets 8, 9 on the detents engage .cams 10, 11 driven by a spindle 14 and skew gears 12, 13 from a liquid meter such as is shown in Specification 213,061, [Class 110 (ii), Rotary engines &c.]. The cam 10 makes one revolution for each half-gallon delivered and drives through reduction gearing 15, 16 a sleeve 21 carrying a ratchet wheel 18, which rotates once for forty revolutions of the cam 10. Engaging the ratchet wheel is a pawl 19 on an arm 20 fixed to a spindle 17 which carries the cam 11 and a presetting pointer 22 operated by a handle 24 and moving over a scale 23. The pointer 22 is returned to zero as the liquid is delivered, the number of halfgallons delivered being determined by the number of ratchet teeth slipped over when presetting the pointer. The spindle 14 also drives through worm and worm wheel 25, 26 and a slipping clutch a shaft 27 carrying pointers 29 moving over dials 30. These pointers are zeroized by a shaft 31 operated by a handle 32 and driving the shaft 27 through skew gears 33, 34 and a slipping clutch. Movement of the pointers 29 past the zero position is prevented by a spring 29<1>. The spindle 17 has a projection 37 abutting a disc 38 on the spindle 27 to prevent the spindle 17 being turned until the pointers 29 have been zeroized, when a cut-away portion on the disc 38 registers with the projection. A lug 40 on the operating lever 2 abuts a detent lever 41 pivoted at 7 and urged by a spring 42 into a recess in a disc 43 secured to the spindle 17, the recess registering with the detent 41 to lock the operating lever 2 when the presetting pointer 22 is in its zero position. The gearing between the meter shaft 45 and the spindle 14 may be variable.. To prevent lost motion between the pawl 19 and the ratchet wheel 18 a blade spring 59, Fig. 12, on the arm 20 abuts a spring 60 in an annular recess 61 in the ratchet wheel so that the pawl is forced into engagement with a tooth on release of the handle 24.
