Abstract

364,320. Separating and sorting gauges. CORNING GLASS WORKS, Walnut Street, Corning, New York, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Gray, D. E. ; 1, Catherine Street, Corning, New York, U.S.A.) Dec. 20, 1930, No. 38470. Convention date, Jan. 4. [Class 106 (ii).] Comprises " limit gauging apparatus for glass articles such as lamp bulbs. A frame 10 forming a support for parallel track rails is provided with vertically sliding rods 12 which carry at their upper ends brackets 13 to the ends of which are secured rail sections 14. The lower ends of the rods 12 are connected by lever linkage to the piston of an air cylinder 22 by manipulating the control valve of which the sections 14 may be raised or lowered. In the lower position, they align with the track members first referred to so that carrier trays moving along the latter may be pushed on to the rails 14. Extending upwards from the frame 10 are standards 27 supporting a vacuum chest 28. Above the chest is a plate 33 hung by links from a shaft 30 journalled in the top of the standards 27 and adapted to be moved up and down when the shaft 30 is rocked by a treadle mechanism 38, 37. Below the chest is a receptacle 39 provided with a shoot 40. Formed in the upper and lower walls of the vacuum chest are aligned openings 41. Extending through the openings is a sleeve 43 which is provided at its lower end with a cup member 44 fitted with soft packing 45, and near the upper opening 41 with a port 46. A similar port 47 is formed in the sleeve near the lower opening 41. Slidable within the sleeve 43 is a tubular valve 48 having a cap 49 for limiting downward movement and provided with radial openings 50 at the lower end. Ports 51, 52 are formed in the valve. Surrounding the sleeve 43 is a sleeve 53 having a port 57 and carrying a bracket 54 supporting depending arms 55 carrying a gauge member 56. A sleeve 58 surrounds the sleeve 53 and supports a gauge member 61. A port 62 in this sleeve normally aligns with the port 57 this being ensured by flanges 63, 64. The lamp bulbs to be gauged are supported in openings in a tray which is then moved on to the rails 14. Air is now admitted to the cylinder 22 and the rails 14 and tray elevated so that the bulbs contact with the lower edges of the valves 48. If the bulb is undersized, it passes harmlessly through the gauges 56, 61 and lifts the valve 48 bringing parts 51, 46 into alignment and establishing communication between the vacuum chest 28 and the cup 44, so that upon lowering the tray the bulb is left suspended. If the bulb is of standard size, it will pass the gauge 61 and fail to go through the gauge 56 which will be lifted together with sleeve 53 which covers the part 46 so that when the bulb contact with the sleeve 48 and ports 46, 51 are aligned, evacuation of the cup 44 is prevented. When an oversized bulb is gauged, the gauge 61 and sleeve 58 are lifted and due to the engagement of the stop flange 63 the ports 57, 62 are brought into alignment with the ports 47 and 52 and the bulb is held by suction. The release of bulbs which are not normal is effected, after the tray has been lowered, by pressure on the treadle 38 which causes the plate 33 to engage the caps 49 and force the valves down thus breaking the vacuum.
