Abstract

363,461. Preventing unauthorized use of engines for road vehicles, and damage from backfiring. DORES, G., 44, Rue du ChÔteau-des-Rentiers, Paris, and GIRARD, L., 86, Rue Perrier, Montrouge, Seine, both in France. Oct. 27, 1930, No. 32221. Convention date, Oct. 28, 1929. [Class 7 (ii).] A tubular member, having an open mouth directed away from and opening into an enlarged part of the mixing chamber of a carburetter conducts ignited gases, resulting from a backfire, to the atmosphere, through an escape valve. As shown in Fig. 2, the ignited gases escape through a member 150 to the atmosphere past a valve 155. A valve 55 may be provided which in the event of a backfire isolates the engine from the carburetter. A gauze screen 80 is provided in the member 150. According to the construction shown in Fig. 3, a perforated poppet valve 61 directs the ignited gases into the tubular member 150, and in the construction shown in Fig: 7, two flap valves 4, 5 isolate the carburetter from the engine in the event of a backfire. The wings of the flap valves may be locked in their closed positions to constitute an antitheft arrangement. A detent 7 engaging abutments 8, 9 is provided on the valves. The spindle 3 may be displaced laterally so that the detent at 7a, Fig. 6, is disengaged from the abutments 8, 9 and permits the valves to move freely. The spindle 3 has a conical end 12 which engages the stems 13, 14 of valves 15, 16 so that when the valves 4, 5 are locked, the valves 15, 16 are opened and thus air alone is drawn into the engine if an attempt is made to start it. The spindle 3 is held against rotation by a spring-pressed pin 33 and it is moved laterally by a key (not shown), or, as shown in Fig. 6, by a Bowden cable 37. The spindle is secured to the cable to which motion is imparted by a key 37a. Should the cable fracture the spindle 3 is displaced by a spring 36 and locks the valves 4, 5 in the closed position. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes an arrangement by which if the distant operating device is torn away claws cut the cable thus ensuring the automatic locking of the valves 4, 5. The breaking of the cable may close an electric circuit and operate sonorous, luminous, or smoke signals. Also the valves 15, 16, Fig. 6, may be replaced by a single valve coaxial with the spindle 3. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
