[Class 143.] An automatic-feed weigher for loose and powdered materials comprises a feed hopper 1, Fig. 1, having a relatively small outlet 2 slightly inclined to the vertical, the feed from the outlet being controlled by an oscillatable plate 3, the oscillations of which decrease in amplitude to decrease the rate of feed as the material accumulating in the weighing- receptacle approaches the predetermined weight. The feed plate 3 is mounted on a vertical blade spring and is oscillated by an alternating current solenoid D, Fig. 9, into the energizing circuit of which a resistance R is inserted step by step as a contact plate 14 on the weighbeam B disengages the contacts 8 .. 12 during the downward movement of the weighing receptacle W. When the equilibrium position is reached and the beam has ceased to oscillate so as permanently to break the contact 12, current ceases to flow through a wire 20 that thereupon contracts and breaks a contact 23, 24 to de-energize a solenoid 25 and allow a core 26 to fall on to and depress the weighbeam. In the event of an overload entering the weighing receptacle, a contact 28, 29 is closed while the wire 20 is still hot and alarms such as a red lamp and a bell are operated. The weighing receptacle is triangular in shape and has a discharge-gate 30 that pivots about its fulcrum 31 under the weight of the material when a toggle linkage 33, 34 is upset by the abutment of the link 34 with a stop 38 during the tilting of the beam. The gate may return under its own weight or may be held open by a weighted arm 39 until it is forcibly closed during the upward movement by the engagement of a projection 40 with a stop 41.
