Abstract

362,320. Screwing dies and dieheads. SOIRON, M., 368, Rue St. Gilles, and SOC.-ANON. DES BOULONNERIES DE LI—GE ET DE LA BLANCHISSERIE, 14, Rue St. Vincent, both in Liege, Belgium. May 11, 1931, No. 13892. Convention date, May 10, 1930. [Class 83 (iii).] In a self-opening die-head screwing machine, tangential chasers c<2>, Fig. 2, are carried by pivoted carriers c rocked about pivots b by blocks k which are mounted on pins j attached to a rotary plate f<1>, Fig. 3. The plate is secured to a ring f which is rotatable to open and close the head by means of blocks h thereon riding in helical slots g in a sleeve d slidably keyed at e to the head a. The plate, which bears against a collar a<2> on the head, is flush with the projecting end a<1> of the head and fits the end accurately in order to exclude cuttings, lubricant, &c. An annular groove v on the sleeve d receives rollers u, Fig. 1, on a yoke-lever n pivoted at o and carrying at its lower end a link p which, together with an arm q pivoted to the machine at q<3>, forms a toggle. In operation, as the workholding saddle t is retracted after a screwing operation a lug s thereon engages a stop r<2> on a rod r connected by an arm q<4> to the arm q so as to rock the latter and straighten the toggle, a shoulder q<2> on the arm q limiting the motion thereof at a position slightly past the dead centre and locking the lever n in the die-closed position. During screwing, a second lug s<1> on the saddle compresses a spring 5 against a collar 5a on a rod z pivoted at n<2> to the lever n, the operation continuing until the lug s engages a second stop r<1> on the rod r, whereupon the toggle is broken and the spring 5 rocks the lever n rapidly to open the die-head. The pivot o of the lever n is arranged on a nut w adjustable along a screw x by means of a hand-wheel x<1> to vary the adjustment of the head, a pointer w<1> and scale y<3> indicating the set position. This construction enables the head to be adjusted without stopping its rotation.
