Abstract

361,596. Semi-automatic exchange systems. COVENTRY AUTOMATIC TELEPHONES, Ltd., CARPENTER, O. I., and CHUBB, A. A., of General Electric Co., Stoke, Coventry. Nov. 14, 1930, No. 34312. [Class 40 (iv).] In a keysender in which markings by the keys on one or more of a number of wires are stored and transmitted as alternating current signals, each signal and interdigital pause is given a minimum duration to ensure correct operation of apparatus controlled thereby. The key-set P operates the register sets AW.. AZ, BW.. BZ, &c. in turn under the control of relays KA.. KD which operate in turn on re:.ease of each digit key. When KA operates, A pulls up over wipers fs3, fs6 of distributer switch FS which takes one step, releases A, and then takes a second step. It is assumed at present that leads 10, 11 and transformer RC are removed. During the combined operating and release times of A, ground from 9 is connected over fs5 and operated contacts of the first register set to one or more of wires 5 .. 8. If or when the second register has been set, KB operates B and FS takes two similar steps under the control of B during which markings are not transmitted. A then reoperates and markings corresponding to the setting of the second register are connected to wires 5 .. 8. The remaining digits are similarly transmitted, KA falls back, releases KB, KC, KD, and the register in turn, and FS goes home. Wires 5 .. 8 are connected to a source of A.C or to sources of different frequencies and primary windings of transformers are inserted in the wires at 12 .. 15. The secondaries are connected to ground at one end and four outgoing wires at the other end. If different frequencies are to be superposed on one circuit, leads 10, 11 and transformer RC are provided, lead 9 is removed, and wires 5 .. 8 are connected to the sources, the transformers in these wires being omitted. The voice-frequency markings for any digit are now combined over wiper fs5 and pass to line over transformer RC. In modifications, the switch FS is replaced by a relay distributer or by a switch driven at uniform speed, or storage may be completed before transmission commences.
