Abstract
361,116. Punching telegraph tapes. IMPERIAL & INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS, Ltd., HIGGITT, H. V. and WARBURTON, F., Electra House, Moorgate, London. No. 35113. [Class 31 (ii).] Selective punching machines.- In keyboard machires for punching telegraph tape in which depression of a key rotates a shaft carrying cams for moving the punches, feeding the tape, and restoring the parts, the tape 24 is fed by a pin wheel 48 vertically through a stationary die block carrying nineteen punches 1, 2 in two vertical columns. Depression of a key 11 raises a yoke 12 and actuates a rod 14 to release the pawl of a one revolution clutch which connects a cam shaft to a constantly moving shaft. Punch selection. The cam shaft carries a punching cam 3 operating a lever 6 on a pivot 7. The lever 6 carries pivots 17 for intermediate members 18, 18a engaging selector combs 20 for the punches. Depression of a key 11 swings an arm 22 about a pivot 23 into the path of the tooth 20b to lock one of the combs. The cam 3 then swings the ever 6 and swings the member 18 associated with the locked comb to operate the selected punch. A punch retracting bar 26 engages the punches and is moved by a member 18e to free and to retract the punches. In a modification, Fig. 8, the cam 3 operates a lever 6 carrying intermediate members 18 one end of which is blocked by combs 20 locked by arms 22. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the cam 3 actuates a lever 6 connected to a toggle 23. One arm 71 of the toggle operates the punch when the other arm 70 is held by a comb 20 locked by a lever 22. Paper feed. Depression of a key 11 swings the corresponding arm 22 to lock spacing comb 30. The selected comb 30 is free to slide under action of a spring 31 so that its end is beneath a projection on a rack 37. A projection 40 on the lever 6 rocks a lever 41, to disengage a slidable pinion 45 from the rack and it falls until stopped by the comb. After the punching operation the pinion 46 is reengaged and a paper cam feed 49, Fig. 5, through rods 51, 55 raises the rack the selected amount to turn the pinion 45 and pin wheel 48 engaging the centre holes of the tape. In order to prevent the tape from dragging and tearing at the feed holes a cam 56 feeds a loop of tape corresponding to the maximum feed. The cam 56 rocks a lever 57 on a pivot 58 and operates a bell crank 60 to thrust a roller 61 against the tape. The punches hold one end of the tape, and tape equal to the maximum feed is withdrawn for the next operation. Combination key. To perforate two characters with the space eliminated, a combination key 11a, on depression, interposes a blade 68 against a rack 37 above the combs 30. When the rack 37 drops the blade is forced above it to prevent the cam 49 from reaching its top position to eliminate the space when the second key 11 of the combination is depressed. Means may be provided for latching the keys until the punching operation is complete and for preventing simultaneous depression of a plurality of keys. Specification 24624/99, [Class 31, Cutting &c.], is referred to.
