361,069. Flanging. ELLIOTT, A., 105, Holmsdale Road, Foleshill, Coventry. Oct. 16, 1930, Nos. 30984/30 and 17793/31. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Making road vehicles.-A sheet-metal panel 2 with pre-formed corner holes 4 joined by diagonal slits 5, for motor car bodies &c. is pressed between dies 7, 13 to form a flanged window opening in the panel, the pressing taking place while the work is heated at the corners by gas burners 11 or electrically. The surplus metal 6 is then trimmed off, e.g. by a guillotine. Alternatively the panel may be provided with a pre-formed window &c. opening the same shape as the final opening, but of less size to allow of enough metal to form the flange. The panel is secured on the lower die 7 by a clamping frame 10 before the top die 13 is screwed down by hand. The lower die is provided with corner holes 12 to accommodate the gas burners, each burner consisting of a number of jets, some of which may supply oxygen. Each burner 11 may be mounted so that as the top die moves down it presses down a feeler rod 19 which slides down the burner on a rod 18 so that the heat is applied only where the metal is being worked on as the die 13 advances. The burner may be pivoted to obtain the same movement.
