Abstract

<PICT:0360581/IV/1> <PICT:0360581/IV/2> Hollow packages of textile materials such as artificial silk cakes are treated centrifugally with liquids or gases in apparatus wherein a fluid is fed under pressure from a source of supply through a conduit to the interior of one or more packages each of which is continuously rotated about its own axis at a speed sufficient to cause the fluid to permeate and to be discharged from the package by centrifugal action, and which is simultaneously traversed along a circular path. The apparatus may comprise a rotatable table with means for supporting thereon one or more containers for the thread packages, and means for rotating each container about its own axis. The container may be a spinning pot liner which has been removed from the spinning pot. The various treating fluids may be supplied to a chamber with feed pipes terminating in spraying devices leading therefrom to each package container. As shown in the drawings, a rotatable table 10 is secured to the upper end of a spindle 11 driven from a shaft 16 by means of a worm 15 and worm wheel 14. Alternatively, the spindle 11 could be rotated by a chain or belt drive, or the table 10 could be rotated by means of a circular rack thereon driven from a pinion on a motor shaft. Clutch mechanism and multiple speed gearing may be provided. A number of chucks 46 mounted on rotatable spindles 18 are disposed around the margin of the table 10. These chucks constitute carriers for spinning pot liners of the kind described in Specification 335,049, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]. The table 10 is of conical shape, sloping downwards from the centre, and is mounted within a tank 19 constructed with an annular trough 21. The chuck spindles 18 are each rotated by means of a pinion 23 gearing with a stationary circular rack 24 which is bolted to the wall of the tank 19. The treating fluids are fed separately from supply tanks through a pipe 25 to a fluid-distributing chamber 26 which rotates with the table 10. Radially arranged feed pipes 28 each lead to a spray device 29 located in each liner 17, and may be lifted clear of the liners when it is desired to remove the cakes from the apparatus. For this purpose, a part of each feed pipe 28 forms part of an articulated framework. When the parts are in operative position, the parallel motion side members 32, 33 lie slightly below the horizontal or dead-centre position. This construction renders only a small aperture necessary in the lid of the liner 17. If desired means may be provided for moving all the spraying devices together. Alternatively, the spraying device may be arranged for introduction through the base of the liner instead of through the top. The movement of the spraying device may be utilized for controlling the supply of fluids. As shown, the lower pivot 35 on the member 33 is in the form of a valve member which cuts off the supply of fluid to the spraying device when the latter is raised. As shown in Fig. 3, each chuck 46 comprises a circular body part 36 screwed to the spindle 18 and provided with two fixed jaws 37 and two movable jaws 43 diametrically arranged at right-angles to the fixed jaws. The jaws 37, 43 are arranged to receive between them a liner 17. The grip of jaws 43 is adjusted by operation of the right- and left-handed screw 41. Endwise movement of screw 41 is prevented by means of shoulders 42 on the screw which bear against a rib 39 of the chuck. The liquids which collect in the trough 21 are removed through pipe 45 and may be returned by a pump to the appropriate supply tank. Specifications 19701/02, [Class 15, Bleaching &c.], 263,239, [Class 120 (ii), Spinning, twisting, &c.], 264,929, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], 301,539, 332,288, [both in Class 23, Centrifugal machines &c.], are referred to.
