Abstract
360,043. Statistical machines. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd., Victoria House, Vernon Place, London. -(Tabulating Machine Co. ; 50, Broad Street, New York, U.S.A.) Aug. 1, 1930, No. 23281. [Class 106 (i).] Electromagnetic switches; contact8.-A statistical machine of the kind having counters, entering means (magnet 98) for each counter, and reading- out mechanism (total-taking contacts 111, 112) for each counter operable to take a reading from the counter and arranged to be driven by a tabulating motor during accumulating and by a reset motor during total-printing, is characterized by a clutch between the tabulating motor and a driving member for the counters, a second clutch between the reset motor and the driving member and means automatically operable to engage one clutch and disengage the other, so as to transfer the driving member to the motor then operating the machine. The machine is generally similar to that described in Specification 216,142, [Class 106 (i), Calculating &c.], printing, total-taking, resetting and restarting (automatic or manual initiation) taking place as in that Specification. 59 are the lower brushes, the upper not being shown. In each counter (three out of five are shown) each denominational wheel 265 has its clutch 264 controlled by an entering magnet 98 which also controls contacts 99, 100. The common clutch shaft 263 in each counter is driven by gearing 262 from a drive shaft 258, common to all the counters, and adapted to be driven by the tabulating or reset motors. A cam 111 is geared to each counter wheel and at total taking a clutch 115 for each counter rotates contacts 112 to feel the cams. Shaft 113 for cams 115 is rotated once each total cycle by a cam 118 driven from the reset motor RM; this motor resetting the counters through half-toothed gear 252, gear 254, shaft 255, and clutches 266. Contacts 112 are connected to contacts 275 which are connected, through bridges 279, to contacts 276 or 277. For each counter a common rod 278 carries the bridges for all the denominations in that counter so that when a magnet 281 is energized the bridges 279 are pulled down to connect contacts 275, 277. Contacts 276 are connected to bars 127 and contacts 277 to sockets 274. To transmit, say, the totals from counter No. 2 on to counter No. 3, the sockets 274 in counter 2 are connected by lines 300 to sockets 69 for the corresponding denominations in counter 3. Switch magnet 281 (counter 2) is connected by line 301 to socket 286 and magnet 116 (counter 3) controlling the clutches 115 for the reading-out contacts 112. Reset clutch 266 for counter 3 is disengaged to prevent resetting of counter 3, this closing contacts 287. Assuming the machine is set for automatic totalprinting, at the end of the first card-group, motor RM is energized and reset clutch magnet 233 closes contacts 292. This completes a circuit, line 82, 290, 291 (clutch 257 thrown in), line 282 for No, 2 counter, magnet 281 for No. 2 counter (pulling down bar 278), 301, 116 (No. 3 counter, breaking clutch 115), 287, 288, 289 (disconnecting the tabulator motor drive T.M., 261), 292, 302, 6, L2, 10, 88 (or 250), 12, and line 83. The counter drive is thus transferred from motor T.M. to motor R.M. which drives through half-toothed gear 253 and gear 256. Motor RM actuates contacts 112 for counter 2 through shaft 113 and cam 118 so that timed-impulses are transmitted over contacts 275, 277, lines 300, and sockets 69 to the magnets 98 of counter 3. Magnets 98 open contacts 99 and close 100, so that the total from counter 2 is printed by the magnets 102 of counter 3, as well as added on to counter 3. Subsequently motor RM resets counter No. 2 through train 252, 254, 255. Several totals may thus be transferred simultaneously between various counters. Specification 199,356, [Class 106 (i), Calculating &c.], also is referred to.
