Abstract

359,444. Actuating controllers; control of D.C. motors. COMPAGNIE GENERALE FRANÃAISE DE TRAMWAYS, 3, Rue Moncey, Paris. May 17, 1930, No. 15252. Convention date, June 5, 1929. [Class 38 (iii).] Regenerative and non-regenerative braking; armature control.-In a series-parallel control system for compound wound vehicle motors allowing for electric regeneration by means of adjustable resistances in the shunt field circuit, the shunt field and series field windings are constantly connected in the same way with their respective motors. Motors M, M<1> are controlled by one of two controllers C, C<1> to which are connected shunt field resistances R, armature resistance D and a resistance 0 for use at the change from series to parallel running. On the shaft 1 of the controller, Fig. 5, is a grooved pulley 7 on which is fitted a friction collar 8 having a stop 9 and a contact 10 connected with the main circuit-breaker. The shaft 1 in addition carries a cam 12 with which a spring-biased pivoted lever 15 co-operates so that if the controller is moved back-. ward from any position between the " off " and the series running position, the contact 10 is opened, but if the controller is moved backward from any of the parallel positions the stop 9 is engaged by the lever 15 and the opening of the contact 10 is prevented. A controller sector 5, Fig. 2, is con. nected with the shaft 1 by a lost motion connection comprising a pin 4 working in a slot in the sector, so that the controller is moved to the full series position without affecting the sector 5 but thereafter operates the sector to insert the resistance 0 between the motor armatures at the transition stage between series and parallel running. If at any time the speed of the motors exceeds the normal speed, the motors are regeneratively braked, and if for any reason the regenerated voltage exceeds a safe limit a relay U, Fig. 1, is actuated to open the main circuit breaker and by means of an auxiliary switch K to connect the motors to a braking resistance A.
