Abstract
359,015. Centrifugal extractors. KIRBY, J. B., R.F.D. No. 16, Everett, Ohio, U.S.A. July 11, 1930, No. 21088. [Class 23.] In a combined washing and drying machine wherein the washing is effected by the axial reciprocation of a pounder 110, Fig. 1, within a perforated clothes container 91, the shaft 46 of the pounder being coaxial with the container, and wherein the drying is effected by the rotation of the container at high speed after the reciprocation of the pounder has been stopped and the container raised within the stationary casing 73 to the position shown in Fig. 3, a pedal 22 controls the drive to the pounder and the vertical and rotary movements of the container. The shaft 46, Fig. 1, moves freely in a sleeve 40 secured in the bottom 2 of the stationary casing and the lower end of the shaft is carried in a stirrup 49, Fig. 8, having upstanding ears which are pivoted at 50 to links 51, Fig. 1, the lower ends of which are pivoted to a lever 32. A disc 53, Fig. 8, having axially projecting teeth 54 is pinned to the shaft 46. The lever 32, Fig. 1, is rotatable about a pin 30 which extends between the limbs 21 of the bifurcated pedal 22 which is pivoted about another pin 20. The arms 35 of a bifurcated lever 36 are carried upon a pin 34 carried by the hub of the lever 32 and arranged transversely to the pin 30, and the upper end of the lever 36 is ball-and-socket jointed to a crank arm 13 carried by a hub 11 rotatable about a stud 10. A motor 125 drives a friction disc 65 through a belt 68 and the disc drives a wheel 42 of which the hub 41 is slidably mounted upon the sleeve 40. In the lowest position of the hub 41 as shown a pinion 44 thereon engages a gear wheel 12 on the hub 11, whereby the shaft 46 is axially reciprocated. When the pedal 22 is depressed the stirrup 49 is raised to a point higher than its normal maximum height during axial reciprocation and at which the clutch teeth 54 of the disc 53 engage axially projecting teeth 45, Fig. 8, of an enlargement of the hub 41, thereby raising the hub to disconnect the drive between the gears 44, 12 and so stopping the reciprocation of the pounder. The raising of the hub 41 also moves the friction wheel 42 nearer to the periphery of the disc 65 whereby the hub 41 is rotated at a greater speed. The rotation of the hub is then transmitted to the shaft 46 through the teeth 45, 54. The operator depresses the plunger before depressing the pedal whereby the upward movement of the clothes container is started by the normal motor-actuated motion of the lever 32, the final upward movement and the disconnection of the gears 44, 12, being effected by the depression of the pedal 22. Buoyant pivoted splash guards 1411, Fig. 3, become operative during the extracting operation.
