Abstract
358,983. Automatic exchange systems. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., Strowger Works, GILLINCS, C., 28, Eldred Road, Mossley Hill, and BELAS, F. T., 24, Stanley Street, all in Liverpool. July 16, 1930, No. 21595. Grant of Patent opposed. [Class 40 (iv).] Multiple metering is controlled by a single switch which rotates continuously during conversation, its bank being variably marked in accordance with the zone of the called subscriber. Fig. 1 shows the application to the system described in Specification 265,971, [Class 40 (iv), Telephones &c.], in which relays 206A, 207A are selectively operated according to the setting of a bidirectional zone-marking switch. When the called party replies, relay 202A energizes and connects relay 204A to an interrupter CNC, of which the speed of rotation may be varied in accordance with the time of day. The magnet TZM steps the metering switch as long as conversation continues, and each time a terminal marked by relays 206A, 207A is engaged, relay 203A operates and applies booster battery to the test wire 10. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the bank of the metering switch is marked directly by a vertically moving wiper VW. Fig. 5 shows the application of the latter arrangement to a first code selector, the switch RXF which gives access to the register controller being used as the metering switch. The switch RXF returns home after the register controller has completed its operation, and when relay D energizes in response to the reply to the called party, relay DA pulls up and connects an interrupter to relay DB, thereby causing the magnet RXM to rotate the switch RXF as long as conversation continues. The additional bank 7c is marked over the vertically moving wiper VW, and each time a marked terminal is engaged, relay J energizes and connects booster battery to the test wire 11, while at the end of each metering cycle a warning tone is applied to the upper speaking wire. A relay MG provides an intermittent holding circuit for the release relay B during the homing of the switch RXF.
