Abstract
358,797. Refuse destructors. TUPPEN, G. L., 137, Sule Pagoda Road, Rangoon, Burma, India. Dec. 6, 1930, No. 36859. [Class 51 (i).] A refuse destructor of the type operating below atmospheric pressure and comprising an inclined grate with fixed and moving bars, the refuse being dried before combustion by the waste gases, comprises a combustion chamber 1 and drying chamber 2 together with an inclined grate having fixed bars 3 and movable bars 4 divided into a number of sections, there being means for varying the rate of movement of the material down the grate section by section. In the construction shown the fixed firebars 3, which alternate with the movable bars 4, are supported in slots in inclined racks 5 which are secured to the side walls and divided into sections to allow for expansion. The movable bars 4 are supported on two inclined reciprocating beams 8 divided into sections which may be reciprocated at different rates to vary the rate of movement of the material. As shown, two sections are employed, one extending throughout the drying chamber and the upper part of the combustion chamber, and the other through the remainder of the combustion chamber. The beams 8 carrying the first section are divided at the end wall 14 of the combustion chamber, the two parts being united by narrower members 15. The beams carry brackets 9 supported on rollers resting on fixed brackets 10, and are reciprocated through rods 20 by eccentrics 22, Fig. 1A. Each eccentric is driven by a ratchet wheel 23 intermittently rotated by pawls operated by rods 30 pivoted to arms 34 which are carried on a rocking shaft 35 and operated from a rotating shaft 42 through a crank pin 40 and connecting-rod 37. By altering the position of the pivot pin 38 connecting the rod 37 to the arm 34 the strokes of the moving bars in both grate sections are simultaneously adjusted, whilst the stroke of the bars in one section may be adjusted relatively to that of the remainder by varying the points of connection of the two rods 30 to the arms 34, thereby adjusting the movements of the pawls operating the ratchet wheels. The moving bars may be given a vertical as well as a horizontal movement by suitably forming the brackets 10 on which the rollers move. The portion of the grate in the combustion chamber may be stepped down with respect to the portion in the drying chamber, and the two parts may be of different inclinations. The gases are drawn by an exhaust fan through an arch 55 in one side of the combustion chamber, and may pass through a supplementary furnace or a boiler, or both, on their way to the chimney. A second exhaust fan draws gases from the flue and delivers them through inlets 62 to the drying chamber, from which they pass through outlets 63 back to the flue. Baffles 66 pivoted to the lower edges of fixed baffles 68 rest on the surface of the material and force the gases to penetrate into it during their passage through the drying chamber.
