Abstract

358,682. Centrifugal machines. SHARPLES SPECIALTY CO., 23rd Street, Philadelphia, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Jones, L. D. ; c/o Sharples Specialty Co., 23rd Street, Philadelphia, U.S.A.) Sept. 13, 1930, No. 27425. Convention date, Sept. 20, 1929. [Class 23.] Discharging.-Deposited solids are dislodged from a centrifuge rotor by an hydraulically operated tool, the movement of which across the rotor is reversed automatically at predetermined points. The rotor has a wall 11, which may be perforate or imperforate, and is mounted upon a shaft 15 carried in bearings supported by the casing 18. The mixture is supplied in any suitable manner, as for instance, by the pipe 21, and the separated solids, after dislodgment, fall into the hopper 23. The dislodging tool 25 is secured to a bar 28 mounted to reciprocate and rotate in bearings 29, 30, 35 carried on the frame 31. The bearing 30 is provided with a stuffing box having compressed packing 311 to prevent material from entering the bearings. The cutting edge of the tool 25 is moved to and from the inner surface of the rotor wall 11 by means of a worm wheel 39, Fig. 4, which rotates with the bar 28 and is operated by the hand-wheel 58, Fig. 1, on the shaft 40, or it may be operated hydraulically. For hydraulic operation the wheel 39 is connected through gearing 42, 43 to the rack 46 secured to the rod 50 of a piston 51, Fig. 1, in the cylinder 52. Liquid under pressure is supplied by pipe 53 to the valve 54, and passes to one end or the other of the cylinder 52 according to the setting of the valve; liquid discharged from the cylinder is returned to the source of supply by the pipe 56. With the valve in the position shown in Fig. 1, liquid is supplied to the right hand end of the cylinder 52 to swing the tool 25 into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 7. Stops 47, 48, Fig. 4, limit the movement of the rack 46 and so limit the movement of the tool 25. To move the tool in a direction parallel to the axis, pistons in cylinders 59, 60, Fig. 9, are connected by rods 62 to a yoke 72 in which the end of the rod 28 of the tool is rotatably secured. Adjustable stops 79, 81 on the rod 28 serve to limit its axial movement by engaging the bearing 35 and the plate 76 respectively. Automatic reciprocation of the tool is obtained by means of lug 101 which engages adjustable members 99 on the rod 96 attached to one end of the pivoted lever 97. The other end of this lever is linked by the bar 102 to the slide 103 which causes the arm 106 to move from one of its extreme positions to the other. A snap action is obtained by the triangular projection 110 riding over the apex of the spring- pressed member 111. The movement of the arm 106 causes a rotation of the valve 88, Fig. 9, so causing the pressure fluid to flow to the requisite end of the cylinders 59, 60. The pump 84 delivers the liquid from the tank 83 to the supply pipe 86 and the valve 88 the flow being controlled by the throttle valve 87. The liquid then passes through pipes 89 or 90 to the cylinders 59, 60, and from them it passes through pipe 91 and the valve 92 back to the tank 83. A byepass 93 is arranged with a valve 94, and this path becomes available for the return of the liquid, without its passing to the cylinders, when the valve 94 is open. The automatic reciprocation of the tool 25 therefore continues while the valve 94 is closed and ceases when it is opened.
