Abstract
Irregular patterns, resembling the marking on certain leathers, such as crocodile leather, are produced on materials such as indiarubber, glass, wood, leather, metal, or artificial resins, by applying thereto emulsions or dispersions of organic materials, which are adapted to produce coagula of initially low mechanical strength, which do not form a continuous film, but tend to gather into irregular ridges. Such coagula, which are preferably formed comparatively slowly, are produced by adjusting factors such as alkalinity or concentration of the dispersions, or strength of the coagulating-medium. The film may be left on the backing, or removed and applied to another surface. Natural or artificial dispersions of indiarubber or other natural resins in non-vulcanized or vulcanized condition, gelatine, casein, viscose, synthetic resins, or cellulose esters and ethers may be employed. Aqueous emulsions or dispersions of solutions in organic solvents, or organic emulsions of aqueous solutions may be used. The coagulation may be effected merely by drying, with or without heating, or by means of a coagulating-solution, or a dehydrating and setting solution, as described in Specification 303,544, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.]. Single or mixed liquids which effect coagulation and swelling concurrently, as described in Specification 324,988, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], may also be used.
