Abstract
357,855. Casting ; forging; shearing. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd., 88, Regent Street, London.-(Assignees of Ford, H. ; Dearborn, Michigan, U.S.A.) Nov. 20, 1930, No. 35015. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1929. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (iv).] Casting-machines; metal-pouring; moulds; castings; castings, extracting.-Castings for subsequent trimming and forging are made of uniform size by pouring metal in slight excess into moulds carried by a conveyer chain so that the moulds are completely filled, excess metal flowing to the following mould. Trimming and forging operations follow while the casting heat still remains in the blanks. A ladle 10, Fig. 3, brought by crane from a converter or hearth furnace to the machine, or a tiltable furnace, is manually rocked by a screw 54 to pour metal to moulds 32, Fig. 6, trunnioned on a double conveyer chain 28, excess metal being directed by an apron 34 on each mould to that following. The chain runs over sprockets 18, 20 to a sprocket driven by an electromotor and is guided along tracks 56, 22, &c. by strips carried on the framing bearing on the upper surfaces of the moulds. When the moulds have moved sufficiently far for the ingots to solidify, they strike a rod 40, Fig. 4, and the end of a track 41 so that they are reversed and move under a helve 42 vibrating under the control of an electromotordriven shaft 48, eccentric 49, and resilient means 46. The ingots are thus ejected and descend a shoot to a second conveyer by which they are conveyed, while still hot, to the trimming and forging presses. Stationary gas jets are provided to preheat the moulds and their conveyer chains.
