Abstract

356,183. Emery and sand cloth and paper &c. WHITE, A. E., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.-(Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co. ; 716, Forest Street, St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A.) March 1, 1930, No. 6839. [Class 60.] Abrasive materials such as sandpaper are made by incorporating the grit in an adhesive material and applying it to the backing sheet, which is then heat-treated, the surface of the sheet having been previously treated, if necessary, with a filler having a clay-like, silicon, or like base, or one similar to the binder employed. The abrasive surface and the back of the sheet may be subsequently treated with a sizing of similar composition to the binder, with additional thinners. The sheet may be subjected to heat and pressure after any or all of the coats, and may be rendered waterproof before the adhesive is applied by oils, grease, or waxes. The adhesive may comprise Chinawood oil (tung oil), resin, linseed oil, dryers, and thinners. Another form contains Venetian red or white lead, Venice turpentine, treated resin containing one part of shellac to two of copal, linseed oil, and dryers, with or without the addition of dissolved rubber. Perilla, oil, fish oil, or semi-drying oils such as soya-bean oil may replace the linseed oil. Dryers may include manganese oxide and borates, or sugar of lead and manganese borate in a resinous vehicle, or acetates of lead and resinate of manganese. Japan dryer may be used containing shellac, red lead, litharge, manganese oxide, burnt umber, gum, linseed oil, and turpentine. A non-drying oil such as castor oil retards the drying action. A sizing coat may also comprise shellac either dissolved in alcohol, or melted with oil and gum compositions, or with cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, or cellulose contagenate, or with Bakelite or other synthetic resin. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 267,516, 281,711, [both in Class 60, Grinding and abrading &c.], and 343,970.
