Abstract

A beam of light from a lamp 4 is projected across the path of the flue gases from a furnace on to a translucent screen 10 visible to the furnace operator, a colour filter 2 being inserted to obtain a definite colour change in the spot of light when smoke is present. Opposite the lamp a pipe 7 is fixed to the side of the flue duct 6 and carries a sleeve 18 slidable and rotatable on its end and fixed by a set-screw 20. A plate 21 fixed to the sleeve carries a rotatably adjustable right-angled prism 9 which deflects the light on to the screen 10 freely supported in a frame 34 with a shading hood 12. A protecting cover 38 is hinged at 40 and adapted to be secured by a pin passed through holes 41, 42. Interposed in the pipe 7 is a glass screen 8 resting in a frame <PICT:0355854/III/1> formed of flanges 13, 14 bolted together with distance-pieces 15 so as to leave a space 16 for air leakage into the pipe 7 and flue to keep the glass clean. A space is allowed between the lens 3 of the lamp 4 and the flue wall allowing leakage of air and enabling a cloth to be inserted for cleaning. The colour filter is such as to pass only red and yellow and is cemented to the lens 3. A lens may be cemented on the emergent face of the prism 9. According to the Provisional Specification two or more coloured beams may be used or a multicoloured screen inserted in the path of a single beam.
