352,200. Balls for games. SPALDING & BROS. (BRITISH), Ltd., A. G., Putney Wharf, Deodar Road, Putney, London.-(Reach, M. B. and Dickson, J. B. ; Springfield, Massachusetts, and Gammeter, J. R. ; Akron, Ohio, both in U.S.A.) June 6, 1930, No. 17654. [Class 132 (ii).] Tennis &c. balls containing an inflating medium under pressure are provided with removable jackets or shells tightly embracing the surface of each ball and thereby preventing expansion beyond the normal size. Each shell may comprise two hemispherical parts 2, 4 which enclose the ball 7 and are secured by clips adapted to engage abutting lips 6 ; if shells without lips be used, the parts may be secured by an adhesive band; or they may overlap. The shell parts and the ball 7 are placed in holders 1, 3 within a chest 5 and the pressure is raised whereupon the holders are moved towards each other, and the ball may be compressed to less than its normal size. The shell may be formed of viscose and applied in the " green " or unshrunk condition, and then allowed to dry and shrink with or without external pressure. In a modification, the shell comprises a cylindrical bag 14 of viscose which is twisted tightly at the neck to enclose the ball 10; a shield 15 of cardboard is used to prevent deformation of the ball. In another form, the shell is formed from a flat sheet of viscose; and the viscose may be soaked in a glycerine solution to avoid brittleness when dry.
