Abstract
352,195. Glass manufacture. BRITISH HARTFORD - FAIRMONT SYNDICATE, Ltd., 142, Ely Place, London.-(Assignees of Peiler, K. E. ; 16, Fernwood Road, and Barker, W. T.; 26, Ellsworth Road, both in West Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.A.) June 2, 1930, No. 17003. Convention date, June 3, 1929. [Class 56.] Delivering molten metal.-Relates to a feeder of the kind described in Specification 227,078, [Class 56, Glass], and consists in connecting the plunger to its operating cam through a toggle joint instead of by means of a rigid link, and in providing mechanism for automatically adjusting the effective length of the toggle at any selected time in the cycle of operation, so that glass charges of different weights and sizes may be delivered in cyclic order to the moulds of a forming-machine. The feeder comprises a plunger 3, Fig. 2, which is reciprocated above, and in line with, an outlet in the floor of a forehearth, and is carried by a bracket 4 supported by guide rods 7, 8. The bracket is reciprocated by a cam 10 which makes contact with a roll 13 on a pivoted arm 14 connected by a link 16 with a compound lever 20, as described in Specification 227,078. The lever 20 is connected with the bracket by a pair of toggle links 30, 31, and not by a rigid link as described in the earlier Specification. The joint 34 between the links is connected by another link 35 with a block lever 36 which is pivoted at 37 to the framework. Thus the movement of the lever 20 will be transmitted to the plunger 3 by the toggle member, and any movement of the lever 36 will cause an alteration in the effective length of the toggle member and an alteration in the character of the movement of the plunger. The block lever 36 is provided with a number of sockets 39 which form slideways for vertically adjustable contacts 40. Each member 40 is in contact with the lower end, the piston rod 45 of a pneumatic cylinder 47 which is secured to the frame, and a spring 50 maintains the member 47 in contact with the rod 45. Each of the cylinders 47 is connected by a pipe 52 with a valve 55, 56, or 57, Fig. 3, and each of these valves is operated by a cam 58 secured to the table 59 of the forming machine and close to a mould 60. In operation, the table 57 rotates in synchronism with the rotation of the cam 10 that reciprocates the plunger, and the toggle mechanism is adjusted so that the feeder delivers a mould charge of a given weight which is .suitable for an article made in one of the moulds 60. The cams 58 for the remaining moulds are so adjusted that they operate the respective cylinder 47, thus moving the link 35 and altering the effective length of the toggles. This alteration causes the delivery of a glass charge of different weight and size, and a glass charge of different weight or size can be delivered to each of the moulds by suitable adjustment of the cams 58.
