Abstract
Relates to processes for the production of material for road-making, briquetting, paving and building blocks, &c., of the kind in which a bituminous binder is mixed with undried soil with the application of heat. According to the invention the mixing is so prolonged that the soil is reduced to a finely divided, dry condition and the binder is uniformly dispersed throughout the mass, the application of heat and the mixing being continued, while maintaining substantial uniformity of temperature of the mass, until the mass commences to granulate and lose its stickiness when handled. The mass can then be laid with or without pressure, and on cooling consolidates into a dense, tough, wear resisting product. The mixing and heating may be carried out simultaneously and in the same mixer, or the materials may be mixed cold or warm in one mixer and then transferred to a heating and agitating device. A suitable binder comprises 75 per cent of pitch and 25 per cent of tar, and this may be used in the proportion of 10 per cent to, 90 per cent of soil. The binder may be added in the form of an aqueous emulsion.
