Abstract
350,569. Fluid - pressure engines. VERNON, F. W., 4550, 7th Avenue, West, Vancouver, Canada. March 15, 1930, No. 8385. [Class 122 (ii).] In a locomotive or other steam-engine separate admission ports 11, 12 and exhaust ports 13, 14 are provided, controlled by a sleeve-valve 15, cutoff being effected by an inner piston-valve 20, without affecting exhaust or compression. Steam is supplied to the interior of the valve 15 from a steam passage 9 through ports 17 and passes to the ports 11, 12 through ports 18, 19. The rod 16 of the valve 15 is pivoted to a lever 35, the lower end of which is connected by a link 34 to the main crosshead 33, while the upper end is connected by a link 36 to a block 37 in a pivoted slotted link 32, which is oscillated by an eccentric 29. The position of the block 37 is adjustable for reversing by means of a link 38. The valve 20 is operated by a lever 46, which is connected to the rod 23 of the valve 20 and to a return rod 40 from the rod 16, so that the valves 15, 20 tend to move together. The lever 46, however, is pivoted on trunnions 47, movable in slots 53 in a forked lever 51, which is pivoted at a fixed point 50 and is connected at its lower end to the engine tail-rod 5. The lever 51 thus moves the valve 20 in advance of the valve 15, the amount of such movement being adjustable by moving the trunnions 47 in the slots 53 by means of links 48, 49. The lever 46 comprises side-plates carrying between them, in spaced relation, a third slotted plate, which passes through slotted members 42 inserted in the rods 40, 23. Blocks pivoted in the slots in the members 42 engage the slot in the third plate.
