Abstract
<PICT:0350482/III/1> <PICT:0350482/III/2> Solids, liquids, or vapours are heated by the heat of condensation of substances having a higher boiling-point than water, in rotary heating apparatus having heating elements over the outside of which the material is conducted, and into the interior of which the heating medium is passed, or vice versa. The process is applicable to the coking of carbonaceous material, heating of liquids or gases or hydrogenation. A multi-stage furnace, comprising numerous superposed heated plates, or a rotary furnace comprising tubes through or around which the material travels, may be used. The temperature may be regulated by regulating the condensation pressure, the supply of material, the time of treatment or the speed of rotation of a rotary furnace. The vapour of naphthalene or sulphur may be employed. Decomposition of the heating medium may be diminished by tinning the contact surfaces. A suitable form of apparatus is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which a collection of tubes 1 is mounted in journals 3, 3a in a stationary container 2. The heating vapour passes through the trunnion 3 and tubes 1 to the trunnion 3a, and oil to be treated flows through the apparatus in countercurrent, and by means of scoops 6 is distributed over the tubes 1. Vapour is drawn off at 8.
