350,246. Making metal sheets. BUDD MANUFACTURING CO., E. G., 2500, Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A. -(Assignees of Budd, E. G. ; 2500, Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A.) June 12, 1930, No. 18045. Convention date, July 2, 1929. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Uniting by fusion; stamping.-A flat sheet-metal blank for die stamping into vehicle bodies &c. is formed by flash-welding together in a common plane two or more metal sheets. The sheets 10, 11 are trimmed along the edges 13 and welded together by apparatus comprising the welding guides 15 spaced apart by gauges 17, 18 temporarily placed between them, the arc from the transformer 16 being started at the narrow end of the angle between the sheets and progressing towards the opposite end as the sheets are approached. The flash 19 of the weld is then machined almost to the gauge of the sheet and finally hammered by dies 21 to the exact thickness. The welded sheet is cleaned by oil spray &c. and then stamped to form the finished article such as an automobile 'body side, Fig. 10.
