Abstract

350,011. Well-drilling plant. SULLIVAN MACHINERY CO., 400, North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. March 5, 1930, No. 7288. Convention date, March 5, 1929. [Class 85.] In a rotary well-drilling apparatus with hydraulic feed mechanism arranged above the derrick floor adjacent the rotary table, the feed mechanism is slidably supported on guides so that it may be moved laterally to clear the table to permit of the usual drilling operations without such feed. As shown, a base 3 supports a rotary table 7 with a split bushing adapted to receive wedge-shaped drive or supporting slips 11 co-operating with the grief stem 13. Hydraulic feed cylinders 2, with liners 23, are connected by channel irons 20 and contain pistons 25 connected to a cross-head 29 with guiderods 38 engaging bosses 40 on the cylinders. A pivoted clamp 33, with spring latch 34, detachably secures a thrust head 46 to the cross-head. Supported between roller bearings 54 and ball bearings 51 in the thrust head is a swivel member 53 with upper and lower clutches 58, 59 for connection to the grief stem; the clutch 59 comprises slidable toothed jaws 61 operated by screws 63 and the clutch 58 comprises wedge slips 67 in a tapered casing 66. The wedge slips are released when desired by a pivoted lever 77 with rollers 75 adapted to engage a member 74 connected by links 72 to the slips. The feed cylinders are held on slides 22 by pivoted bolts 41. When the hydraulic feed is to be dispensed with, the clamp 33 and bolts 41 are released and the feed mechanism moved laterally away from the drill stem.
