Abstract
349,930. Dynamo-electric machines. DRYSDALE, C. V., Admiralty, Whitehall, London. Feb. 25, 1930, No. 6195. [Class 35.] Brush-holders; motors, controlling; rotary transformers.-The armature of a separately-excited motor 2 is supplied from a set of brushes 9 .. 12 on the commutator of a rotary transformer 1, so that by moving these brushes from their normal position midway between the ordinary fixed brushes 5 .. 8 in either direction, the voltage applied to the motor armature is varied in magnitude and direction to give a variable-speed drive. The brushes 9 .. 12 are moved either by hand or power, and sparking is prevented by employing a commutator of large diameter, and large number of segments, extending the commutator axially, and employing long lines of narrow brushes, making the field as strong as possible, and using a small number of armature turns. A cam or the like is provided for lifting and short-circuiting the movable brushes in their normal position, so that the motor may be brought quickly to rest. In addition, an electromagnetic brake is provided to become effective when the current taken by the motor is below a certain value. A mechanically-driven generator may be used instead of the rotary transformer, and the invention is stated to be applicable to seriesparallel combinations of motors, and to alternating- current commutator machines.
