Abstract
347,209. Highpotential switches. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-( Ohio Brass Co. ; Mansfield, Ohio. U.S.A.) Jan. 20, 1930, No. 1917. [Classes 38 (iii) and 38 (v).] Electric motor actuation ; earthing parts of ; systems for controlling travel for a fixed distance.-An insulating column carries a switch arm which has a driving connection with an insulating shaft rotatable about a longitudinal axis, the shaft serving for operating the switch arm and for bracing the supporting insulating column. As shown, two switch arms 13, 14 are carried on insulating columns 10, 11 on a support 12, and are connected to heads 19, the shafts of which are rotated by gearing in housings 20<11>. This gearing is in turn rotated by insulator stacks 20 driven by a motor through gearing 26, 27. Simultaneously with the opening movement of the arm 13, an earthing switch arm 31 is rotated about a pivot 30 by a shaft 29 and gearing 28 into a position where it engages the arm 13 and earths the apparatus connected to the lead 24. In a modified form, the arm 13 engages a stationary earth contact. Figs. 6 and 7 show a form wherein two insulator stacks 84, 85 are mounted on brackets 87 and support the respective switch arms 80, 81, which are attached to pivoted heads 82 operated by stacks 86 from a motor connected to a shaft 112 and gearing. Insulated controls 93 may be provided for improving the electrostatic field. Fig. 5 shows a remote control system for the operating motor. To close the switch, the contacts 47, 49 are moved in the direction of the arrow 51 to connect the armature through a switch 58 across the supply 37, 38, and the field 67 through contact 49. In closing the switch, the motor operates a rider 61 which, at the end of its travel, opens the switch 58 to stop the motor and closes at 56 the circuit of a red indicator lamp R. To open the switch, the contacts 48, 50 are moved upwards connecting the field 67 with the same polarity, but causing the current to flow in the opposite direction through the armature through switch 59. At the end of the opening movement, the rider 61 opens at 59 the circuit of the motor and closes at 57 the circuit of a green indicator lamp G.
