[Class 12 (ii).] In Bowden-wire mechanism wherein the end of the outer covering 4 of the cable 7 is secured, as by means of a gland nut 10 and packing 11, Fig. l, in a body 3 having a passage 6, through which the cable extends and having also a hole 15 adapted for the periodical introduction of lubricant under pressure into the passage 6 and thence into the covering 4, escape of lubricant from the passage 6 is prevented by means of packing 13 pressed on to the cable by a threaded block 14. The block 14 may force the packing 13 against a member 25, Fig. 10, which in turn forces packing 26 into a tapered recess 27 so as to secure the covering 4. As shown in Fig. 3, the covering 4 is secured in a member 16 threaded into the body 3 so as to compress the packing 13 on to the cable, the member having an annular recess 17 and holes 18 establishing communication between the lubricant supply hole 15 and the interior of the member. Alternatively, the packing may be arranged within the member 16 and compressed by a spring. A conical washer 21, Fig. 6, may be arranged within the member 16 between the passage 15 and the covering 4 to act as a non-return valve. In another arrangement, the supply 8, Fig. 7, to which the cable 7 is secured is formed with an extension 22 adapted to be held forcibly against the end of the passage 6 during introduction and distribution of lubricant so as to prevent escape thereof, the nipple being so held either by the action of the mechanism in its inoperative position or by hand; or the operating lever 1 or the nipple block 9 or a washer, loosely or rigidly mounted on the cable, may be adapted to close the passage.
