Abstract

346,004. Repeating systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. and BONE, R. S., Columbia House, Aldwych, London. Jan. 1, 1930, No. 54. [Class 40 (iv).] In an electric signalling system in which a plurality of devices (e.g. gain regulators) are provided to compensate for changes in the characteristics of the signals when said signals have departed from a predetermined form (e.g. strength) for a predetermined time, the different compensating devices are given substantially different time constants so as to prevent hunting between the compensating devices. The time constants of these devices preferably progressively increase in the direction of transmission so that each device performs its compensating function before the succeeding device commences its compensating function. The Figure shows one form of delay device comprising a valve V the bias of which is removed by relay B under the control of marginal relay A which is operated by rectified pilot carrier current. The operating time constant is varied by varying resistance R through which condenser C discharges when relay B is operated. Alternatively a bi-metal strip type of thermostat may be employed, or the motors or other driving means may be arranged to run at different speeds. In a two-way system the timing of the compensating devices for the east to west circuit is arranged as in a single circuit and the west to east circuit is similarly arranged with the fastest operating device at the transmitting end.
