Abstract
346,003. Telegraph receivers. CREED & CO., Ltd., SALMON, R. D., and CLIFFORD, H., Telegraph Works, Croydon. Jan. 1, 1930, No. 53. [Class 40 (iii).] Relays or other telegraphic instruments of the type in which the armature is normally maintained in vibration, and is held from vibration during the passage of a signalling current, are provided with mechanical means for producing vibration of the armature either directly or through additional electromagnetic windings acting on the armature. As shown in Fig. 1 the armature 1 of a polarized relay 2 is connected to a rod 4 fitted with teeth to control a member 5 under constant torque, in the manner of an escapement. The torque in the member 5 is transmitted through a friction clutch by a constantly-rotating driving member (not shown). The member 5 drives by a linked eccentric pin 6 a pivoted arm 10 which carries a contact blade 13 between stops 11, 12 and may control any other desired operation of telegraphic apparatus. The lever 10 in turn oscillates a rod 15 carrying a stop 16 between two scissor-like arms 18 which are connected bv links 20, 21 to an adjustable spring 22. By suitably tensioning the spring 22 one of the arms engages a side of the armature, overcomes the attraction between the polarized armature and pole-piece, and moves it to its opposite position. During this movement the member 5 is released for rotation through half a revolution so bringing the other arm 18 into engagement with the opposite side of the armature. Thus a continuous vibration of the armature is produced which is timed to coincide with the signal speed, the vibration being, however, held up at one or other of the armature positions on receipt of a corresponding signalling current in the energizing coil of the relay 2. In an alternative form (Fig. 2, not shown) the vibration of the armature is produced electromagnetically by one or other of a pair of windings controlled by the mechanically oscillated contact blade.
