[Class 100 (i).] In apparatus for rewinding magnetic sound record carriers and the like from one spool to another wherein a brake is applied to the et-off spool or spindle provision is made for reducing automatically the braking action as the speed of the let-off spool increases consequential on the decreasing diameter of the carrier on the spool. This is effected by centrifugal action on spring-controlled braking elements. The take-up and let-off spools S<1>, S<2>, Fig. 2, for the magnetic wire or band D are secured to spindles A extending down into a casing G and mounted by balls l, Fig. 5, in bearings reduced at the lower ends m on which pulleys R with an annular rib p are mounted by ball bearings O. The lower ends of the shafts A carry discs K secured by radial pins s<1>, s<2> normally retracted by a circular spring f as regards the let-off spindle but which can be projected by a pin s to engage lugs on the rib p of the pulley R as regards the driving spindle. The discs K carry a pair of pivoted and spring- controlled brake levers h<1>, h<2>. Fig. 4, whose short ends bear against the ribs p. The pulleys R are connected by a belt R<1>, Fig. 2, running over a driven pulley S, and the brake levers carried by the spindle of the take-up spool bear against the ribs of the pulley R on that spindle with a pressure which decreases owing to centrifugal action on the levers as the speed of the spindle decreases.
