345,622. Automatic exchange systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., Columbia House, Aldwych, London. -(Stevens, C. E.; 18, Rue Boudewyns, Antwerp, Belgium.) Dec. 24, 1929, No. 39378. [Class 40 (iv).] In systems employing line-finders in tandem, faults which may cause the second line-finders to hunt indefinitely are traced by means of a faultlocating circuit which hunts for the particular first line-finder affected and by blowing its fuse enables the calling line to be extended over another switch. Faults may arise due to disconnections in the testing or holding leads or to faulty operation of subscribers' line and cut-off relays. In order to trace a fault the attendant operates a key BAK individual to a particular group of first line-finders and a circuit is completed over a contact of the second line-finder starting relay Cslr for the power magnet P of the fault-locating switch. When wiper a reaches a contact marked by battery over a front contact of relay Ltr and corresponding therefore to a first-finder circuit LF1 for which second finders LF2 are hunting, relay Dtr operates to stop the fault-locating switch and connects up relay Dsr which starts a timing switch TA. If the finder circuits are in order, the release of relay Ltr following the successful operation of a second finder causes the fault-locating switch to move on to the next link circuit over which a call is being set up. If, however, relay Ltr has not released by the time switch TA reaches its final position relay Dtr is operated and locked over release key RK closing a circuit for relay Scr which lights group lamps PL and connects direct ground to wiper a thus blowing the fuse in the first finder LF1. The calling line is seized by another first finder and a visible and audible alarm of the blown fuse is given. The position of wiper a indicates the particular circuit which is faulty.
