Abstract

Catalysts for the production of ketones by subjecting the vapours of primary aliphatic alcohols in admixture with water vapour to temperatures of 200-700 DEG C. comprise mixtures of metallic zinc, zinc acetate, zinc oxide and zinc carbonate with one another, or mixtures of one or more of these substances with one or more oxides, hydroxides or salts (e.g. carbonates, borates, silicates) of earth alkali metals such as calcium, barium and magnesium. The catalysts may be supported on non-metallic filling or contact materials, such as pumice or kieselguhr. The apparatus may comprise a tube or other form of apparatus of copper, iron, staybrite or earthenware. In an example a catalyst of zinc acetate or of zinc oxide and calcium silicate in a copper tube is employed for the production of acetone from ethyl alcohol at 475-485 DEG C.ALSO:Aliphatic ketones are manufactured by subjecting vapours of primary aliphatic alcohols containing at least two atoms of carbon in the molecule, in admixture with water vapour to high or relatively high temperatures, particularly temperatures of 200-700 DEG C., in the presence of a catalyst consisting of zinc or a salt or compound thereof, or a mixture of such substances. Advantageously the catalyst may also contain alkali or alkaline-earth oxides, hydroxides or salts, and may be supported on non-metallic filling or contact agents. Catalysts mentioned are metallic zinc, zinc acetate, zinc oxide or zinc carbonate and mixtures with one another or with oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, borates and silicates of calcium, barium and magnesium. The apparatus may be made of copper, iron, staybrite, or earthenware. The vapours may be mixed with oxygen or a gas containing oxygen or with an indifferent gas, and the reaction may be carried out under atmospheric, reduced or elevated pressures. In an example, a mixture of ethyl alcohol vapour, steam and oxygen is passed over a catalyst consisting of zinc acetate, or of zinc oxide and calcium silicate, at 475-485 DEG C., producing acetone, which may be purified by fractional distillation. The preparation of diethylketone, from propyl alcohol is referred to.
