Abstract

343,919. Selective punching- machines. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London.- Western Electric Co., Inc.; 195, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 22, 1929, No. 35862. [Class 31 (ii).] In a machine for duplicating perforated record sheets blanks and master cards are fed simultaneously through the machine, and data on the master cards is sensed and transferred to the blanks whilst the master card is fed uninterruptedly past sensing mechanism. A plug board is provided by means of which certain fields of the blanks may be punched with repetition data. Feeding arrangements. The blank cards are fed from a hopper 171 by a picker 172 driven from a shaft and conveyed by geared rollers 114, 124 to a punching position where it is stopped by a plate 184 projected into the path of the card by a cam bowl 192. Feed rollers 129 at the punching position are freely and resiliently mounted. The cards, after punching, are fed by geared rollers 131 to a bin 182. The master cards are fed by similar geared rollers. Fig. 4, from a hopper 81 to a bin 98 over a contact strip 99 so that brushes 103 complete a circuit through holes on the card. The rollers and the pickers are intergeared and driven from a shaft 73. Punching mechanism. Forty-five columns of ten punches 282 are carried in a head 272 reciprocated by a cam bowl 264. Each column is controlled by a gag 214 on a rack-bar 213 oscillated by a quadrant 217 on a shaft 218 oscillated from the shaft 73. Energization of solenoids 194 associated with each bar 213, lifts a detent 201 and allows a spring 207 to rock a bell crank 204 to lift the appropriate rack 213 into mesh with its quadrant 217. Directly the rack-bars start moving they are held raised by a bar 261. The bell cranks are restored by a bail 232 actuated by a cam. In each cycle of the machine the ten horizontal rows on the master card are sensed and the position of the gags is determined by the position at which the quadrant and the racks are meshed. The circuit for duplicating a master card, Fig. 8, is earth 307, commutator switch 104 which is closed as the card is fed in, brushes 103, solenoid 194, earth. Repetition data. In order to punch on the card repetition data which is not on the master card, a switchboard 254 is provided, Fig. 1, not shown, for cross plugging sets of jacks with a continuously moving switch. The drive shaft 73 oscillates a shaft 240 (Fig. 2, not shown) carrying control arms 241 co-operating with ten sets of contacts 251. Each contact arm is wired to one of a set of ten jacks 243. Each contact of each set of contacts 251 is wired to a jack of a set of jacks 254. A set of jacks 258 is earthed. By cross plugging the jacks 249, 243 and jacks 254, 258 data is added to the card. If it is desired to punch a hole in the fourth position in column 38, of the card, Fig. 10, the jack 249 in the thirty-eighth position is plugged to the jack 243 in the " 1 " position and the " 3 " jack 254 of the first set is plugged to jack " 1 " of the first position, the circuit then is earth 259, jacks 258, 254, contact 251, jack 243, solenoid 194. Specification 343,975 is referred to.
