Abstract

342,961. Gas producers. POETTER, F., 5, Cecilienalle, and POETTER GES., 19, Grabenstrasse, both in Dusseldorf, Germany. April 15, 1930, No. 11892. [Class 51 (ii).] Relates to a device for adapting the height of the stirring arm of a gas producer to the changing height of the fuel, of the kind in which the stirring arm is periodically raised by a positively acting device and then released to descend under the action of gravity. As shown in Fig. 3, a shaft 2 carrying a stirring arm 4 is rotated by means of a worm wheel 6 slidably keyed to the shaft. On the upper end of the shaft is mounted an externally screw-threaded sleeve 9 rotatable but not slidable on the shaft. The sleeve engages an internally screw-threaded nut 12 rotatable in fixed bearings 13 and carrying a ratchet wheel 14. On the nut is supported a ring 15 with an arm 16 carrying the ratchet pawl 17 and oscillated from the shaftdriving mechanism. In operation, a forward oscillation of the ratchet arm rotates the nut 12, and the sleeve 9 and shaft 2 are thereby raised; on its return movement a plate adjustable as desired on a stationary part of the apparatus removes the pawl from the ratchet wheel thus allowing the shaft 2 to fall under gravity as far as the fuel permits. The nut 12 may also carry a friction disc 25 engaged by a friction pawl 26 acting in the reverse direction to the pawl 17 thus assisting the downward movement of the shaft when the pawl 17 is disengaged. In a modification, Fig. 6, teeth 29 formed on the shaft 2 are engaged by a toothed wheel 30 mounted on a shaft 31 carrying a ratchet wheel 14 actuated by a pawl 17. A friction disc 25 and friction pawl 26 may be included. In a further modification, Figs. 7 and 8, the upper end of the shaft 2 carries a partly cut away screw thread 43 which engages in a similar thread 45 in a nut 44. When the thread elements are in mesh, the rotation of the shaft causes it to be raised. The leading ends of the threads 43 are pointed to facilitate entry into the threads 45 and preferably the nut 44 is held in a casing 41 by bevelled teeth 47 projecting into bevelled recesses 49 allowing an upward movement of the nut should the resistance to the entry of the threads 43 into the threads 45 be great.
