Abstract

342,898. Statistical apparatus. REDFERN, C. A., 242, Heerengracht, Amsterdam. Feb. 5, 1930, No. 3855. Convention date, April 19, 1929. [Class 106 (i).] Totalling. - A record-card-controlled statistical machine has automatically operating mechanism which reduces vibration of moving parts of the machine by applying a holding or retarding force to said parts immediately they are released. The invention relates to the kind of machine described, for example, in Specification 26896/13, [Class 106 (i), Calculating &c.]. The adding sector a and type sector b are pivoted at c to the frame d. Connected to these sectors by a link g is a rod 1 bearing against a stop 2. Bearing on rod 1 is a cam 5 pivoted at 4 and having a spring 6 so that the cam tends to jam the rod 1 against stop 2 and hold the sectors. Normally, however, this cam is held off by a pin 8 linked to a rod 9, which has a member 10 controlled by link 12 and crank 13 on a shaft h which only moves at totalling. A rod 15 is continually reciprocated vertically from shaft i. Normally this action is ineffective, but at totalling the member 10 is moved into the path of 15 and rod 9 is raised to remove pin 8. Cam 5 then locks rod 1, thus preventing the sectors from flying back and causing shock. In Fig. 2 the pin-box (not shown) is reciprocated vertically by a cam on shaft j. This shaft also carries a cam 19 coacting with a roller 20 on lever 22 controlled by a spring 23. When the pin-box moves up, the springs on many of the reading pins are compressed by the pins meeting the unpunched parts of the cam. On the down stroke these springs are released and cause shock. The cam 19 is so shaped, however, that at this moment it extends the spring 23, this cushioning the pin-box. In Fig. 3 the main shaft k oscillates in known manner, whereby the sectors are restored to normal, as described in Specification 26896/13. This shaft carries a cam 24, of which parts O-II are straight and part II-III is curved. A roller 26, on a lever 25 pivoted to a fixed point p, is controlled by a link 28 and spring 27. When shaft k moves in direction A it brings the sectors to rest at normal position and the pressure of spring 27 counteracts the vibration due to the freeing of the sectors. Cam 24 is so shaped that the counter-pressure of spring 27 is greatest when the short sector springs e are freed (roller 26 on path O-I), and when the long sector springs f, Fig. 1, commence to be released (roller at point I) ; while with roller 26 at position 2 the stress due to freeing of springs f is reduced to zero. From cam points II-III there is no compensating action.
