Abstract
342,734. Thermostats. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., Columbia House, Aldwych, London.-(Tournior, M. C. ; 46, Avenue de Breteuil, Paris.) Nov. 6, 1929, No. 33853. [Class 64 (ii).] A mirror device sensitive to temperature changes controls a beam of light directed upon a lightsensitive cell, and the output of the cell is amplified by a thermionic device and fed back to a heating device. A box A, which may contain a piezoelectric device, is provided with a heating coil H, and a temperature-sensitive resistance B which is placed in the circuit of a Wheatstone bridge W. The mirror m of a galvanometer G reflects a portion of the triangular beam of light provided by a lamp C and diaphragm D on to a photo-electric cell P. A thermionic amplifier V1, V2, V3 is provided, and the coil H is heated by the current from the amplifier. The Wheatstone bridge may be replaced by a bimetallic spiral S, Fig. 2, carrying the mirror m, or by a reservoir R, Fig. 3, containing liquid the expansion of which deforms a flattened tube T and thus rotates the mirror. In another alternative a mercury thermometer may be used having a flattened tube adapted to reflect light on to the photo-electric cell. The beam of light may be modulated by using an alternating current for the lamp C, or by a rotating slotted disc K.
