Abstract

341,277. Radiators for motor vehicles. HUMBER, Ltd., and IRVING, J. S., Humber Works, Stoke, Coventry. Jan. 22, 1930, No. 2207. [Class 29.] Air-admission shutters controlled by a thermostat are provided with a supplementary hand control by an operator. The operator's control may be held in a latched position while the engine is not running and be automatically released when the engine is started, or it may be maintained by the operator when desired, for example to warm up the engine quickly. As shown in Fig. 4, the thermostat 2 may be connected to a lever 15 which is connected to toggle links 26 and by a spring 29 to a hanger 27 pivoted at 28. The shutter-actuating rod 7, is connected to the links 26, 27 and the operator's control 9 is connected to the joint of the toggle. Simple lever or cord mechanism may be used, or a parallelogram of links, the thermostat and shutter rods being connected to opposite corners and the operator's control and a spring to the other corners. The operator's control 41, Fig. 6, and the shutter rod 39 may be connected to a bell crank lever 40 pivoted at 34 to the spring- retracted armature 35 of an electromagnet. When the operator's control is applied, the bell crank lever is moved to the overset position shown and the thermostat is held out of action, whereas when the electromagnet 36 is energized from the dynamo while the ignition switch is in the running position the armature is attracted and the bell crank moved to the underset position to restore the thermostatic control. Alternatively a throttle-actuated member or a piston-rod moved by the oil pressure or engine suction may be employed to restore the thermostatic control when the engine is started.
