A. ; 1819, Broadway, New York, both in U.S.A.) Jan. 6, 1930, No. 510. Convention date, April 13, 1929. [Class 40 (iv).] A sound-reproducing device, more particularly a gramophone pick-up, comprises an armature having a flexible elastic reed projecting therefrom and damping means adapted to embrace a part of the reed. The construction of pick-up shown comprises a base 4 on the forward portion of which is mounted a permanent horseshoe magnet 6 provided with pole pieces 7, 8, the faces 9, 10 of which are inclined upwardly as shown in Fig. 5 whilst the faces 11, 12 are concave. A winding 13 is located in the space between the pole pieces and an armature 15 is disposed within this winding. The armature has a pyramidal head 16 disposed between pole faces 9, 10 and bearing portions 17, 18 clamped between the pole faces 11, 12 with an interposed strip of rubber, the portion 18 being hollow to receive a screw 19 for clamping stylus 20. A flexible reed 22, preferably formed as a thin strip of brass, has one end secured in the head 16 and is embedded in a block 23 of rubber &c. housed in a casing 24 having arms 25, 26 provided with elongated openings 28 for securing screws 29. This construction enables the casing and rubber block to be shifted slightly one way or the other so as to centre the armature in the air gap. A block 30, mounted on the base 4 rearwardly of the magnet 6, is provided with contacts 31 connected by wires 35 to the winding 13 and with sockets 32 which receive plugs 33 attached to wires 34 leading to a suitable amplifier. A cover co-operates with the base 4 and the whole casing is mounted in a yoke on a carrying arm. According to a modified construction, the reed 22 is in the form of a T, the upper arms of which are held against the top of casing 24 by the block 23 and extend into contact with the side walls of the casing.
