Abstract
Hydroxy- or nitro-substituted carbazoles are obtained by removing amino groups by known methods from substituted carbazoles containing amino groups in addition to hydroxy or nitro groups. In examples, (1) 2-nitrocarbazole is obtained by diazotizing 2-nitro-3-aminocarbazole and heating the diazo solution; on reduction it yields 2-aminocarbazole, the formyl, acetyl, benzoyl, and p-toluenesulphonyl and phenyl derivatives of which are described, (2) 4-nitrocarbazole is similarly obtained from 3-amino-4-nitrocarbazole; on reduction it yields 4-aminocarbazole, and (3) 1-hydroxycarbazole is similarly obtained from 1-amino-8-hydroxycarbazole, which may be made by melting 1-aminocarbazole-8-sulphonic acid (Specification 340,625), advantageously in the form of its acetyl compound, with caustic potash.
