Abstract

340,476. Ventilating shaft tops. KUCKUCK, H., 17, Pieperstrasse, Bremen, Germany. Aug. 23, 1929, No. 25736. Addition to 320,926, [Class 137, Ventilation]. [Classes 25 and 137.] A ventilator for vehicles &c. as claimed in the parent Specification, in which a plate having a concave outer surface is fixed adjacent the mouth of an horizontal tubular member communicating with the interior of the vehicle &c., is provided with interior curved guiding surfaces which have no abrupt changes of direction and are so arranged that all partial air currents have to travel within the ventilator over a similar length of path up to the exit into the outer air, whereby whirl-free streaming of the air is ensured. As shown in Fig. 1, a tube 1 communicating with the space to be ventilated, e.g. the hold of a ship, is bent rearwardly towards the closed end of the horizontal tubular member 3 which is provided with a guiding surface 7 comprising two curved parts, an adjustable concave plate 12 being situated adjacent the mouth of the member 3. Streamline blades 6 are provided in the upper curved part of the tube 1, and the plate 12 is provided with a central boss or raised portion 13. The plate 12 may be mounted on a threaded rod 11 fitted to the tube 1, or may be carried by rods sliding in bearings on the exterior of the member 3, and may be detachably mounted in order that the device may be used as an airsupplying device, in which case the upper and lower parts of the blades 6 are symmetrical. A rubber ring may be provided at the open end of the member 3 against which the plate 12 may be secured to close the ventilator. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the horizontal member 44 is double-ended, each end being furnished with a concave plate 46, and is provided with curved guiding surfaces 49 opposite the vertical tube 42 communicating with the space to be ventilated. The tube 42 projects into the member 44 to prevent the entry of rainwater, and is provided with a curved upper edge 53. If the tube 42 is of large diameter, the surfaces 49 merge into a convex surface facing the tube 42 and situated substantially on the axis of the member 44. If the member 42 is of considerable length, the ends are turned outwardly to form additional deflecting surfaces 51, thus ensuring that a region of low pressure exists at the end of the member 44. Rain shields 100, 101, Fig. 4, may be provided between the end of the horizontal member 110 and the concave plate 102, the shields being arranged so that a free flow of the escaping air is ensured.
