Logarithmic calculators; totalizators. - In distant control calculating-apparatus particularly applicable to totalizators, and operated by the displacement of fluid through pipes, means are provided for indicating the ratio any item total bears to the grand total. In Fig. 2, which shows apparatus corresponding to one item, liquid displaced from a distant station for this item passes up a tube A into a vessel B and raises the mercury column in an index tube C above a normal electric contact index D whereupon an electric motor E drives a pump F to transfer fluid from the vessel B to a tank G until the mercury falls below the index D when the motor automatically stops. The motion of the pump F, which is thus proportional to the item fluid displacement in the tube A, is transmitted through a shaft H and gearing H<1> to a ram or displacer H<2> comprising a spiral plunger operating in a cylinder H<3>, which positively displaces a proportional amount of fluid along the pipe J to the total collecting apparatus. At the same time the rotation of a cylinder H<4> integral with the shaft H causes, through the agency of a cord H<5> passing round its periphery and that of a logarithmically contoured drum K<1>, gearing K<2>, and a displacer K<3>, a negative fluid displacement along the pipe K<5> proportional to the logarithm of the item total, back lash between the drums H<4>, K<1>, being prevented by a cord O attached to a counterweight device through a pulley P. Similar apparatus at the grand total station collects the fluid displacements from all the tubes J of the various items and returns a volume proportional to the logarithm of the grand total less a desired proportion deducted as taxes, if desired, through a pipe L, which, with the pipe K<5> is connected to a vessel B<1>. Thus the rotation of a pump F<1>, operated similarly to the pump F to keep the level in the vessel B' at the index D<1>, is proportional to the logarithmic difference of the grand and item totals. The indicator to show the ratio of these totals may be a logarithmically divided drum driven off the pump shaft M or the liquid displaced by the pump F<1> may be conveyed direct to a logarithmically calibrated tube.
