Abstract

339,636. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). June 7, 1929. Tar. - Tarry liquids are passed through a filtering diaphragm to which a layer consisting of finely divided carbonaceous residues containing oily, tarry, or asphaltic substances has been applied. The residues used are those obtained by destructive hydrogenation or heat-pressure treatment of coal, peat, shale, tars or mineral oils, and they are preferably heated to 250‹ to 300‹ C. to remove lighter fractions. The residues may be deposited on the diaphragm from suspension in the liquid to be treated or in another liquid, or if they take. the form of a paste or pulp they may be applied directly to the diaphragm. The Figure shows an arrangement in which a rotary vacuum filter A receives, in the space B, a layer of carbonaceous residue supplied from a container G. The lower part of the drum dips into a trough D containing the liquid to be filtered, and the layer is removed by a cutting- device F. The process can also be carried out in sieve centrifuges.
